The ‘Nikolaus’ Christmas tree brings Alpine Christmas magic to the Römerberg
In 2026, a very special Christmas greeting will make its way from the Austrian mountains right into the heart of Frankfurt: the imposing spruce tree ‘Nikolaus’ from Wald-Königsleiten will become the resplendent centrepiece of the Frankfurt Christmas market. With thousands of lights, an extraordinary history and a specially composed Christmas carol, it bridges the wintery mountain landscape with the festive atmosphere of the city on the Main.
From the mountains to Frankfurt’s Römer
Its roots lie in Wald-Königsleiten, yet its journey takes it right to the heart of Frankfurt: this year, the ‘Nikolaus’ Christmas tree is creating a very special link between the Austrian Alps and the German city on the Main.
Back in October, a delegation from Frankfurt set out in search of the perfect Christmas tree. They finally found what they were looking for in the municipality of Wald im Pinzgau: a magnificent spruce that will soon make Frankfurt’s Römerberg shine with festive splendour.
Following professional felling and careful preparation, an extraordinary journey begins for ‘Nikolaus’. On 3 November 2026, the tree will be erected on Frankfurt’s Römer. Just in time for the festive opening of the Christmas market on 23 November 2026, it will be aglow with thousands of lights, spreading Christmas cheer amongst visitors from all over the world.
And so, a tree from Wald-Königsleiten becomes a special ambassador for our region and a symbol of the connection between two places that share one thing in common: the joy of the Christmas season.
